Even a hardcore Finnmarking can bring tears to his eyes when this magical light dances in the sky. This is the light show of all time, and something you only have to experience at least once in your life. The Northern Lights have been the subject of superstition since ancient times. Kids were told that if one waved a white kerchief at the Northern Lights, it would come and take you. Do you dare to try?
Seiland has very little traffic and artificial light, and is therefore a perfect place to experience the Northern Lights without interference from the surroundings.
What are the Northern Lights?
It occurs when electrically charged particles are ejected from the sun and collide with the gases in the Earth's atmosphere. The different colours seen occur because the particles collide with different gases, and are also dependent on how high up in the atmosphere the collision occurs.
Perhaps that's why the Sami called the Northern Lights "the crackling light" (guovssahas), at a time when most of the sound one heard came from nature, and not from airpods?!
